WATER CONSERVATION UPDATE (12/31/08)
Because conservation remains critical to ensure water availability for future needs, the Governing Board is continuing the rule-making process for year-round landscape irrigation measures focused on lawn watering. Up to 50 percent of South Florida's available daily water supply is used for lawn irrigation.
The proposed Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Conservation Measures Rule would limit all landscape watering to two days a week, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m., for all sources of water including utilities, private wells or withdrawals from canals, lakes or ponds. Users of reclaimed water will be allowed up to seven irrigation days.
The proposed Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Conservation Measures Rule is one component of a recently adopted Comprehensive Water Conservation Program designed to reduce water use while developing a lasting water conservation ethic throughout South Florida.
The public is invited to participate in the landscape irrigation rule-making process. The SFWMD Governing Board is expected to consider final adoption of the Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Conservation Measures Rule at a public hearing scheduled for January 15, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.
